Para mis hijos y yo, el venir de Albania a los Estados Unidos fue una experiencia emocionante y una oportunidad maravillosa. Las primeras semanas fueron difíciles. Muchas cosas eran nuevas para nosotros,

el lenguaje, la cultura, la gente, la comida pero nos adaptamos al nuevo estilo de vida rápidamente. Aprendimos el idioma, nos adaptamos a la cultura e hicimos nuevos amigos. Después de poco tiempo, nos sentimos muy cómodos viviendo en Athens. Pero había algo muy importante que no teníamos, seguro médico.

Cada día, rezaba para que ni mi familia ni yo nos enfermáramos. Tenía miedo de enfermarnos porque no tenía seguro médico pero el hecho de sabía que los doctores en Estados Unidos son profesionales y preparados me daba tranquilidad.

Un día, me enfermé pero no quería ir al doctor. Sabía que necesitaba tener seguro médico para poder ser examinada por un doctor pero decidí preguntar a mis amigos si sabían de alguna persona o lugar donde pueda ir y recibir asistencia sin tener que gastar mucho dinero. Fue entonces que supe acerca del Centro Médico Mercy. Este centro ofrece la oportunidad a gente con bajos recursos o sin seguro médico de recibir ayuda de doctores y personal profesional. Después de unas cuantas visitas, me recomendaron al ginecólogo, Doctor Judson Shelnutt. El Doctor Shelnutt es un hombre joven, amable y amigable. Después de examinarme cuidadosamente, me dijo que necesitaba someterme a una cirugía, especificamente, histerectomía.

En cuanto recibí la noticia, me preocupé y no podía creerlo. Estaba estresada, no sólo debido a mi estado de salud pero sólo el hecho de pensar en tener que pagar por la cirugía me asustaba. El Doctor Shelnutt entendió mis preocupaciones y me dijo que no le importaría realizar la operación sin cobrarme porque venía recomendada del Centro Médico Mercy. Sus palabras me tranquilizaron.

Se llevó a cabo la operación y todo salió bien. Me gustaría agradecer al Doctor Shelnutt y al personal del Centro Médico Mercy for su ayuda. También tengo muchos amigos estadounidenses y albaneses quienes me ayudaron antes, durante y después de la cirugía. Dos de estas personas son Peggy Snap y el Pastor Dar Orme quienes me hicieron compañía durante mi proceso de recuperación. Aunque estaba lejos de mi país y de mis hermanos y hermanas, encontré a personas maravillosas quienes se convirtieron en mis hermanos y hermanas en los Estados Unidos.

Para finalizar, me gustaría agradecer a mi esposo, Selim, y a mis dos encantadores hijos quienes me dieron fuerza y me apoyaron durante tiempos difíciles. Mi marido una vez me dijo que lo último que se pierde es la esperanza. Esto se hizo realidad y nos ayudó a todos a seguir trabajando y a no perder la esperanza porque los milagros se hacen realidad.

For my sons and I, coming from Albania to the United States was an exciting and wonderful opportunity. The first weeks were overwhelming. A lot of things were new to us: the language, culture, people, and food, but we adapted to the new way of life pretty soon. We learned the language, we adapted to the culture, and we made new friends. After a little while, we felt very comfortable living in Athens. But there was one important thing that we were missing: health insurance.

Every day, I prayed for my family and for myself not to get sick. I was afraid of getting sick because I didn't have insurance, but the fact to know that doctors in the United States are very professionally prepared gave me comfort.

One day, I became sick, but I didn't want to go to a doctor. I knew I needed health insurance to get examined by a doctor, but I decided to ask friends to see if anyone knew of a person or place where I could go and get affordable treatment. That's when I was told about Mercy Health Center. This center gives opportunity to people with low income or no health insurance to receive help by professional doctors and staff. After a few visits to the center, I was recommended to a gynecologist, Doctor Judson Shelnutt. Dr. Judson is a young, kind, and friendly man. After he examined me very carefully, told me I needed surgery, more specifically, a hysterectomy.

Once I got the bad news, I was shocked and I couldn't believe it. I was in stress, not only because of my health, but also because just the thought of having to pay for surgery scared me. Dr. Shelnutt understood my worries and told me that he was willing to do the surgery without charge for me because I was recommended by Mercy Health Center. His words were of great relief to me.

Surgery took place and it went well. I would like to thank Doctor Shelnutt and the staff at Mercy Health Center for their help. I also had American and Albanian friends who helped me before, during and after surgery. Two of these people were Peggy Snap and Pastor Dar Orme who accompanied me during my recovery. Even though I was far away from my home country and my beloved sisters and brothers, I found wonderful people who became my brothers and sisters in the United States.

Finally, I would like to thank my husband, Selim, and my two wonderful sons who encouraged and supported me during difficult times. My husband once told me, "Every cloud has a silver lining." This saying became true for me and I encourage everybody to keep working and hoping because miracles do come true.
