¿CAMINANDO DEBAJO DEL ARCO? UNA LEYENDA DE UGA

Si estás cerca del Arco, el símbolo más conocido de la Universidad de Georgia, verás como muchos estudiantes pasan por los lado pero raramente por debajo. Dice la leyenda que si caminas debajo del arco, nunca te graduarás.

El Arco está basado en el Gran Sello de Georgia, el cual aparece en la Bandera del estado. El Arco es la representación de la Constitución estatal y sus tres columnas representan la sabiduría, la justicia y la moderación.

Daniel Huntley Redfearn, miembro de la Clase de 1910, llegó a Athens proveniente de Florida con la determinación de graduarse y parece que fue él quien originó la tradición. Al estar frente al Arco en la calle Broad, se prometió a si mismo que no caminaría por debajo hasta obtener su diploma. Uno de sus profesores supo sobre la promesa de Daniel y se lo mencionó a sus otros estudiantes, comenzando una tradición que aún persiste.

¡De manera que cuando veas a esos estudiantes de UGA que no pasan debajo el Arco, acuérdate de la leyenda!

PASSING UNDER THE ARCH? A UGA LEGEND

If you are close to the Arch, the most known emblem of the University of Georgia, you will see many students passing it by its sides, but rarely under it. Legend says that if you walk under the arch you will never graduate.

The arch was patterned after that on the Georgia's great seal, which appear in the state flag. The arch is a representation of the state constitution and its three columns also represent wisdom, justice and moderation.

It looks like Daniel Huntley Redfearn, a member of the Class of 1910, who arrived in Athens from his hometown in Florida highly determined to graduate, was the originator of the story. When in front of the Arch, on Broad Street, he vowed to himself that he would not walk under it until he had his Diploma. One of his professors learned about Daniel's promise and mentioned it to his other students, starting the tradition that still holds.

So enjoy it and remember the legend when you see those UGA students not passing under the arch!
