Stella Sailors y los Servicios Sociales Católicos: Sirviendo a la comunidad hispana

Hace 17 años Stella Sailors llegó a Athens de Colombia. En aquél entonces, no había ningún restaurante hispano en Athens y no conocía a nadie en Athens con quien hablar español. En las tiendas, al oír su acento extranjero, los estadounidenses le preguntaban de dónde era, no había mucha gente de otros países viviendo en Athens; una persona que hablaba inglés con un acento extranjero era casi exclusiva.

Seis años más tarde, los inmigrantes hispanos empezaron a llegar y a establecerse en Athens. Esto marcó el principio de la carrera profesional para Sailors en Athens. "La razón yo empecé a trabajar como voluntaria era la necesidad. Recuerdo que recogía ropa y la llevaba a diferentes sitios y empecé a ver la necesidad de la gente. Me puse a pensar, llegué en una situación muy buena, con un gran apoyo de mi esposo, yo no tenía que trabajar para sobrevivir. Siento un respeto por los inmigrantes que tienen que llegar y pensar desde el primer momento en que tienen que sobrevivir. Esta parte para mí fue la que más me movió. Siento una obligación moral de devolverle a la gente parte de todo lo que recibí o por lo menos parte de todas las buenas circunstancias en las que llegué, pasar eso a la gente que no llega en esas circunstancias. Empecé con la idea de trabajar por seis meses; desde eso hace ya ocho años".

Ahora Sailors es la directora de los Servicios Sociales Católicos, una organización sin fines de lucro compuesta de tres empleados de tiempo completo, tres personas con contrato de tiempo parcial, más de 40 voluntarios trabajando en el programa de ESL (inglés como segundo idioma) y más de 300 estudiantes hispanos en las clases de ESL. Sobre su papel como directora, Sailors dice, "El papel más importante es el de abogar por la comunidad hispana y abrirle la puerta a esta comunidad". Un ejemplo de la iniciativas que toma Sailors fue el problema del Vacindario Garden Springs donde unas 500 personas tuvieron que ser desalojadas de sus casas móviles para la construcción de apartamentos para estudiantes; muchas personas perdieron su vivienda debido a que sus casas eran viejas y no se podían mover. Sailors organizó una coalición de varias iglesias y organizaciones sin fines de lucro para buscar posibles soluciones al problema y ayudar a los residentes a buscar nuevos sitios donde vivir.

Pero su proyecto de más envergadura es el programa de ESL. El programa ofrece clases nocturnas de diferentes niveles de ESL a adultos en la Escuela San José y en College Place; los voluntarios enseñan las clases. La coordinadora de este programa, Nikki Ashcraft, dice, "Actualmente hay mucho énfasis en satisfacer las necesidades educativas de los jóvenes y eso es muy importante, pero no podemos olvidar las necesidades educativas de los adultos también. Existen varios esfuerzos en las escuelas públicas para promover la alfabetización de las familias. No podemos olvidar a esas personas que están aquí sin su familia; ellos también tienen una necesidad de aprender inglés y mejorar su educación".

Además de ESL, los Servicios Sociales Católicos ofrecen consejería y ayuda en temas de inmigración, traducción y empleo en los condados de Clarke, Barrow, Madison, Jackson, Oglethorpe y Oconee. Elizabeth Taxel ocupa el cargo de trabajadora social de los Servicios Sociales Católicos y es consciente de los problemas que ocurren con los inmigrantes hispanos. "La gente viene a nosotros por varias razones; el empleo es una de las más importantes. Mucha gente viene a este país para trabajar y es difícil conseguir empleo si no se tiene un permiso legal y si no se habla inglés".

Para el futuro de los Servicios Sociales Católicos, a Sailors le gustaría expandir el programa de ESL y llegar a más vecindarios. Actualmente trabaja con un grupo de abogados que prestará servicios de inmigración gratuitos a los clientes de los Servicios Sociales Católicos. Reciente-mente, los Servicios Sociales Católicos recibió un préstamo federal para crear un programa de educación sobre los peligros de las pandillas.

El programa incluirá consejería para jóvenes involucrados en pandillas. Habrá dos programas en las escuelas y una persona que estará trabajando con la gente en las calles. Sailors también quiere iniciar una serie de charlas para la comunidad sobre salud y el peligro de manejar bajo la influencia del alcohol. Los Servicios Sociales Católicos reestructurará sus servicios para satisfacer las necesidades de la creciente población hispana. Según Sailors, "Los cambios que vayamos realizando dependerán de los problemas que vayan surgiendo en la comunidad".

Stella Sailors and Catholic Social Services: Giving Back to the Hispanic Community

Seventeen years ago, Stella Sailors arrived in Athens from Colombia. At that time, there was not a single Hispanic restaurant in Athens and she did not know anyone with whom to speak Spanish. In stores, upon hearing her foreign accent, Americans would ask her where she was from. In those days, there weren't many people from other countries living in Athens; a person who spoke English with a foreign accent was practically exclusive.

Six years after Sailors' arrival, the Hispanic community of Athens began to arrive and establish itself. This marked the beginning of a major career for Sailors.

"The reason I started to work as a volunteer was the need. I remember that I collected clothing and brought it to different locations and I started to see people's needs. I began to think that I arrived in a very good situation. With the support of my husband, I didn't have to work to survive. I feel a respect for the immigrants that have to arrive and think from the first moment about how they will survive. This was the part that moved me. I feel a moral obligation to give back to people part of everything I received or at least part of the good circumstances in which I arrived pass this along to those people who don't arrive in those circumstances. I started with the idea of working six months; since then it has already been eight years."

Today Sailors is the director of Catholic Social Services, a nonprofit organization composed of three fulltime employees, three contracted employees, more than 40 volunteers involved with the ESL (English as a Second Language) program, and more than 300 Hispanic ESL students. About her role as director, Sailors says, "The most important role is that of advocating for the Hispanic community and opening the doors to this community." An example of the initiative that Sailors takes was the Garden Spring's project. There were more than 500 people living in more than 100 mobile homes there and everyone had to move their mobile home for the construction of apartments. Many people lost their home because it was in bad condition and couldn't be moved. Sailors organized a coalition of various churches and nonprofit organizations and together they came up with solutions and helped residents find new places to live.

But Catholic Social Services' largest program is the ESL program. Different levels of ESL are offered to adults in the evening at St. Joseph's school and College Place; volunteers teach the classes. The coordinator of this program, Nikki Ashcraft, says, "There is a lot of emphasis these days on meeting the educational needs of children, and that's very important, but we mustn't forget the educational needs of the adults as well. There are a lot of efforts in the public schools for family literacy, but we mustn't forget those people who are here without their family. They have a need to learn English and to increase their level of education as well."

In addition to ESL, Catholic Social Services offers counseling and help with immigration, translation services, and job development to Clarke, Barrow, Madison, Jackson, Oglethorpe, and Oconee counties. Elizabeth Taxel is the case manager for Catholic Social Services and sees directly the problems that occur with Hispanic immigrants. "There are a lot of different reasons why people come to us; employment is a major reason. A lot of people come to this country to work and it's difficult to find a job when you don't have legal permission to work and when you don't speak the language."

With regard to the future of Catholic Social Services, Sailors would like to expand the ESL program and disseminate it into other neighborhoods. At the moment she is working with a team of lawyers who will donate their services to help the clients of Catholic Social Services with immigration issues. The organization also recently received a federal grant to start working against gangs. There will be two programs in middle schools as well as an employee who will be working with people on the streets. Sailors also wants to initiate a series of discussions with the community on health and driving under the influence.

Catholic Social Services will restructure itself to satisfy the needs of the growing Hispanic population. Said Sailors, "What changes we can expect depend on the problems that arise in the community; we'll be putting those changes into place."
