A Parent's Role in School SuccessEs difícil para los padres encontrar tiempo para involucrase en la escuela de sus hijos cuando están tan ocupados con el trabajo, las responsabilidades del hogar y otras actividades. Pero todos los jóvenes lo hacen mejor en la escuela cuando los padres se involucran en su educación. Usted es el primer y más importante maestro de su hijo y conoce sus fortalezas, habilidades y necesidades mejor que nadie.

Estas son algunas ideas para comenzar a involucrarse en la educuación de su hijo.

Comienze a temprana edad

• Lea a su bebé desde el principio y siga haciéndolo toda la vida.

• Enseñe ritmos y canciones a su bebé.

• Examine a su bebé para detectar problemas de visión y audición a temprana edad.

Inscriba a su hijo en la escuela

Puede inscribir a su hijo en la guardería a los 5 años en la Oficina de Información para Padres del Distrito Escolar del Condado Clarke ubicada en el 240 Mitchell Bridge Rd. Traiga un documento de identificación con su foto, formulario de inmunización 3231, tarjeta del seguro social de su hijo, si tiene una, certificado de nacimiento y prueba de su dirección.

Sin embargo, su hijo no tiene que esperar hasta los 5 años para ir a la escuela. Considere estos programas gratis para sus hijos:

Pre-K: 4 años. Para más información llamar al 357-5239.

Head Start: de 3 a 5 años. Llame a Brenda al 548-2091 o a Valerie al 542-4931.

Early Head Start: familias con hijos de 0 a 3 años. Llame a Kathleen (inglés) o a Angie (español) al 227-7839.

Even Start: padres y sus hijos de 0 a 7 años. Llame Phyllis (inglés) o Javier (español) al 357-5315.

Involúcrese en la escuela de su hijo:

• Conozca a los maestros de su hijo y visite la escuela. Asista a reuniones de padres y maestros. Revise el diario de su hijo para ver qué tarea tiene y otra información.

• Comuníquese con el maestro/a por teléfono o notas si tiene alguna inquietud o pregunta.

• Asegúrese de que la escuela sabe cómo comunicarse con usted en caso de emergencia.

• Asista a tantas actividades escolares como le sea posible.

• Sea un voluntario en la escuela, siempre pueden utilizar su ayuda.

• Escriba una justificación si su hijo falta a clase y envíela al día siguiente.

Cree un ambiente propicio para el estudio en el hogar:

• Hable con su hijo sobre la escuela.

• Designe una área de estudio que no tenga distracciones como televisión o video juegos.

• Limite el mirar la televisión a dos horas al día.

• Establezca una hora para ir a dormir y hágala cumplir, los niños necesitan mucho descanso.

• Pase tiempo con su hijo y diviértanse juntos. Sea un compañero de los estudios

de su hijo

Si tienen alguna pregunta o inquietud sobre la escuela, puede contactar el director de la escuela de su hijo, el trabajor social de la escuela o el consejero escolar. Algunas escuelas también tienen enlaces bilingües que ayudan a los padres a comunicarse con los maestros (vea la lista). También puede llamar al Servicio Social Católico al 548-9421 si necesita un intérprete.

Recuerde que el éxito escolar es en realidad un esfuerzo de equipo e involucra a los estudiantes, los padres, los maestros y la comunidad, trabajando juntos para que los niños puedan conseguir sus metas. ¡Trabajemos juntos para que éste sea un gran año escolar!

A Parent's Role in School Success

It is difficult for parents to find time to get involved in school when we are busy with work, household responsibilities, and other activities. But all children do better in school when parents are involved with their education. You are your child's first and most important teacher and know much more about your child's individual strengths, abilities, and needs than anyone else. Here are some ideas for getting involved in your child's education.

Start Early

• Read with your baby right away and throughout his life.

• Teach your baby rhymes and songs.

• Screen your baby early to catch any problems with vision or hearing.

Enroll Your Child In School

You can enroll your child in kindergarten at age 5 at the CCSD Parent Information Office at 240 Mitchell Bridge Road. Bring your photo ID, immunization form #3231, a social security number if your child has one, a birth certificate, and proof of your address.

However, your child doesn't have to wait until he turns 5 to go to school. Consider these free programs for young children:

• Pre-K - age 4. For more information, call 357-5239.

Get Involved With Your Child's School

• Get to know your child's teachers and visit the school.

• Attend parent-teacher conferences.

• Check your child's agenda book every day for homework assignments and important information.

• Communicate with the teacher by phone or notes if you have concerns or questions.

• Make sure that the school knows how to contact you in case of emergency.

• Attend as many school activities as possible.

• Volunteer at school - they can always use your help!

• Write an excuse if your child is absent from school and send it in the next day.

Create a Positive Learning Environment At Home

• Talk to your child about school.

• Set up a homework area that is free of distractions like TV and video games.

• Limit TV time to no more than two hours per day.

• Set a bedtime and stick to it - children need lots of rest!

• Learn along with your child by enrolling in an adult education program.

• Spend time with your child - have fun together!

Be A Partner In Your Child's Learning

If you have a question or concern about school, you can contact the principal of your child's school, the school social worker, or the school counselor. Some schools also have bilingual parent liaisons who can help you (see the list below). You can also call Catholic Social Services at 548-9421 for an interpreter.

Remember that school success is really a team effort- it takes students, parents, teachers, and communities working together for children to achieve their highest potential. Let's work together to make this a great school year!
