Ayudando alimentar a familias con hambre

En 1917, mi familia empezó a escapar de Rusia con solamente lo poco que llevaban en la bolsa a pesar de que era castigado con la pena de muerte. Se escondieron en un barco y llegaron sin papeles a los Estados Unidos, un país nuevo y totalmente desconocido. Gracias al duro trabajo y a la ayuda de otros pudimos establecer una familia. Debido a la experiencia de mi familia, no creo que una persona deba ser definida como "ilegal." Cometer un crimen, sí es ilegal, pero una persona no.

Con la experiencia que tengo y mi opinión respecto a la inmigración–la cual me salvó la vida–estoy orgulloso de ser miembro del programa ‘Estampillas para comida’. El propósito del programa es ayudar a la gente a comprar comida. Mi meta personal es ayudar a las personas elegibles para recibir estos beneficios pero no lo saben, especialmente a los ancianos y la comunidad hispana.

Ante todo, quiero que la gente sepa que no estoy aquí para deportar a nadie. Mi organización no tiene ninguna conexión con el Departemento de Inmigración. Lo que quiero hacer es ayudar a familias de la misma menera que otras ayudaron a la mia.

La mayoría de mis clientes son familias con hijos. Algunos tienen trabajos y otras no. Si los hijos nacieron en los Estados Unidos, la familia puede recibir beneficios, no importa si los padres son indocumentados. También, si alguien de la familia ha vivido en este país durante cinco años, puede recibir beneficios.

Quiero explicar y aclarar algunas dudas acerca del programa ‘Estampillas para comida’. Primero, el solicitar o recibir beneficios de este programa no está relacionado con la solicitud de residencia ni ciudadanía a los Estados Unidos. Debido a que la ayuda del programa se considera ayuda en forma de bienes materiales y no en dinero efectivo, el recibir las estampillas de comida no constituye un "cargo público" (public charge). Por consiguiente, no tiene nada que ver con las solicitudes de residencia o ciudadanía. Otra caractarística del programa es que no es necesario tener documentos de identificación para recibir beneficios.

Por ejemplo, si los padres han inmigrado sin papeles pero tienen hijos nacidos en este país, tienen derecho a recibir beneficios para los niños. También, es necesario aclarar que las estampillas no son realmente estampillas. Los beneficios vienen en forma de una tarjeta parecida a una tarjeta de crédito, y cada mes el programa deposita dinero en la cuenta. De esta manera, cuando las familias compran comida y pagan, pareciera que estuvieran ultilizando una tarjeta de crédito.

Quiero que la comunidad sepa que estoy aquí para ayudar. Nadie debería tener que elegir entre alimentar a sus hijos y pagar las cuentas. Tres días a la semana visito varios lugares en Athens para aceptar solicitudes para el programa y para informar a la gente. Helping to Feed Hungry Families in Athens

In 1917 my family started escaping from Russia with what little they could carry. If they had been caught they would have been killed. They hid in the bottom of a boat and arrived in the United States without papers to a new and completely unknown country. A mixture of hard work and help from others allowed us to establish a family. It is because of my family history that I do not believe that a person can be defined as "illegal." Committing a crime is illegal - a person is not.

Because of my personal history and my beliefs about immigration – which saved my life – I am proud to participate in the Food Stamp Outreach Program. The general idea of the program is to help people buy food. My personal goal is to help groups of people who are eligible for benefits but may not know it, particularly in the elderly and Spanish-speaking communities.

Above all, I want everyone to know that I am not here to deport anyone. My office is not connected in any way to the INS. What I want to do is help new families in the same way that other people helped my family in the past.

The majority of my clients are families with children. Some have jobs and others do not. If the children were born in the United States the family can receive food stamp benefits, even if the parents don’t have papers. Also, if a member of the family has had permanent residence for five years, they can receive benefits.

Some of the least known and most important details of the program are what I want to clarify with this article. First, applying for or receiving food stamps has no effect on applications for citizenship or permanent residence. Because they are considered aid in material goods and not cash, food stamps do not constitute a "Public Charge." For this reason, they have nothing to do with applications for residence or citizenship. Another important part of the program is that you don’t need to have papers to receive benefits.

For example, if the parents have immigrated without papers but they have children who were born in this country, they can receive benefits for the children. Another thing is that food stamps are not literally stamps. The benefits come on what looks like a credit card and every month the program adds money to the account. This way, buying food with Food Stamp Benefits looks just like using a credit card.

More than anything else, I want the community to know I am here to help. No one should have to choose between feeding their children and paying the bills. That’s why we are here to help. Three days every week I will be in different parts of Athens to accept applications and answer questions about the program.
