Nunca es demasiado tarde para aprender: Programas gratis de alfabetización en Athens

En el Condado de Athens-Clarke, 18,9 por ciento de la población adulta no ha terminado la escuela secundaria. El Programa de Alfabetización de Athens-Clarke, parte del Programa de Certificado de Alfabetización Comunitaria de Georgia, es una organización bajo la cual existen otros grupos que proveen alfabetización, educacón básica para adultos, preparación para el examen de equivalencia de la escuela secundaria (GED por sus siglas en inglés), clases de computadora e inglés como segundo idioma (ESL por sus siglas en inglés). Existen muchos programas de alfabetización en Athens donde los adultos de todas las edades y nacionalidades pueden continuar su educación. En estos programas, los adultos pueden adquirir las des-trezas y conocimiento necesarios para obtener un mejor trabajo y mejorar la calidad de vida.

Los programas de alfabetización son dirigidos por voluntarios. Rubén Valles, mexicano, es un profesor voluntario de ESL en los Servicios Sociales Católicos. "Me gusta ser voluntario porque más que nada me gusta ayudar a mi gente, a la gente que acaba de llegar porque yo recuerdo cuando llegué a este país también sin saber inglés," dice Sr. Valles. "Es bonito tener gente que dona su tiempo para que alguien pueda sacar algún beneficio". Las personas interesadas en ser voluntarios deben contactar a los diferentes programas y a los números de teléfono en la tabla.

El Programa de Alfabetización de Athens-Clarke apoya la alfabetización de nuestra comunidad dirigiendo a estudiantes a programas educacionales que se acoplen a sus necesiades y recogiendo fondos los cuales son distribuidos a los programas de alfabetización para adultos a través de becas y préstamos. It's Never Too Late To Learn: Free Adult Literacy Programs in Athens

In Athens-Clarke County, 18.9 percent of the adult population do not have a high school diploma. The Athens-Clarke Literacy Council, a participant in Georgia’s Certified Literate Community Program, is an umbrella organization for groups that provide adult literacy, adult basic education, preparation for the General Educational Development (GED) high school equivalency exam, computer literacy, and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction.

There are many free adult literacy programs in Athens where adults of all ages and nationalities can continue their education. In these programs, adults can acquire the skills necessary to obtain a better job and to improve their quality of life.Volunteers staff many of the adult literacy programs in Athens. "I like to be a volunteer because more than anything I like to help my people, the people who have just arrived because I remember how I also arrived in this country without knowing English," said Rubén Valles, who is from Mexico and is a volunteer ESL teacher at Catholic Social Services. Ruben continued, "It’s nice to have people who donate their time so that others benefit." The Athens-Clarke Literacy Council supports adult literacy in our community by referring students to educational programs that meet their needs and by raising funds which are distributed to the adult literacy programs through a grant process.
