Nuevo programa para jóvenes de Athens

En Athens se ha formado un nueva asociación para beneficiar a los jóvenes y sus comunidades. Un miembro de esta sociedad es ‘People of Hope’, una comunidad de casas móviles las cuales ha sido desalojadas de su terreno y trabajan juntos para comprar un nuevo lugar donde vivir. El otro socio en una nueva granja orgánica en Athens administrada por una cooperativa llamada ‘Full Moon’. Sus esfuerzos han creado el programa de verano ‘Líderes de People of Hope’, en el cual particpan jóvenes de People of Hope quienes tienen la oportunidad de asistir a programas de liderazgo, creatividad y habilidades para el trabajo. Estos programas se llevan a cabo en una granja de 100 acres administrada por la Cooperativa Full Moon.

El programa comenzó a principios de julio y se centra en dos puntos: 1) la granja, incluyendo sus áreas agrícolas y naturales, y 2) los intereses de cada estudiante, los cuales van desde mejorar sus habilidades artísticas hasta encontrar un buen trabajo. Cada día en la granja, los jóvenes aprenden sobre agricultura y jardinería, metas personales y a trabajar con mentores y otros jóvenes. Aprenden sobre cómo funciona una granja orgánica, incluyendo campos de vegetales, jardines de hierbas, gallineros y maqui-naria para agricultura. Las actividades incluyen crear y cultivar su propio jardín, realizar proyectos de arte individualmente y en equipo y aprender sobre la preparación, nutrición y aspectos sociales de los alimentos. Hay mucha atención individualizada. Cada semana, el número de adultos participando se acerca al número de jóvenes en el campamento e incluye a expertos en agricultura, eco-logía y otras áreas. La granja también está asociada a la Universidad de Georgia.

Todas las personas involucradas en el programa paracen disfrutarlo. "Es muy divertido, conoces a otras personas por-que trabajas con ellas", dice Nikki Williams de 15 años. Ella no es la única que parese disfrutar el campamento. José Luís Robles de 13 años, dice, "aprendí cómo crear mi propio jardín, las plantas y cómo mantenerlas vivas. No sabía que podía hacer todas estas cosas".

Paul Hirsch, estudiante de posgrado y quien ha trabajado con People of Hope y la Cooperativa Full Moon desde su creación, comenzó el programa. Según Hirsch, "People of Hope está intentando hacer algo que nunca se ha hecho en Georgia. La Cooperativa Full Moon también es un grupo de personas trabajando para cambiar las relaciones entra las personas, las comunidades y sus terrenos. Espero que al compartir sus experiencias y animando a los jóvenes a que lideren el camino, puedan ayudarse a lograr sus metas". Como mencionó Hirsch, cuando People of Hope adquiera su propio terreno, se convertirán en el primer vecindario de casas móviles en Georgia administrado por una cooperativa.

La educación es un elemento muy importante de la Cooperativa Full Moon y el conocimiento y habilidades de liderazgo que están desarrollando podrás ser llevados a sus hogares, escuelas y comunidades. Este verano se trata de plantar las semillas de una buena ralación. En el futuro se intentará hacerlas crecer.

A New Program for Athens Youth

In Athens, a new partnership has formed to benefit young people and their communities. One member of this partnership is the People of Hope, a mobile home community that has been temporarily displaced from its land and is working together to purchase a new site. The other partner is a new cooperatively managed organic farm in Athens, known as the Full Moon Cooperative. Their combined effort is the People of Hope Summer Leadership Pro-gram and involves teenagers from the People of Hope attending a leadership, creativity, and job skills program located on the 100-acre farm managed by Full Moon Cooperative.

The program, which began in early July, is organized around two general themes: (1) the farm, including its natural and agricultural areas, and (2) the students’ specific interests, which range from improving artistic skills to finding a good job. Each day at the farm, the young people learn about farming and gardening, identifying personal goals, and working with mentors and each other. They get to see all aspects of an operational organic farm, including the fields of vegetables, herb gardens, chicken coop, and farm equipment.

Activities include preparing and planting their own small garden, doing individual and group art projects, and learning about the preparation, nutrition, and social issues of food. There is also a lot of one-on-one attention. Each week the number of adults involved is close to the number of young people and includes experts in agriculture, ecology, and other areas. The farm is also affiliated with University of Georgia.

Everyone involved in the program seems to be enjoying it and learning a lot. "It’s very fun: you get to know other people by working with them," says Nikki Williams, age 15. She isn’t the only one offering a positive response so far. Jose Luis Robles, age 13, says, "I learned how to start my garden, and a lot about plants and how to keep them alive. I didn’t know that I could do this."

Paul Hirsch, a graduate student, who has been working with the People of Hope and Full Moon Cooperative since their inception, started the program. According to Hirsch, "The People of Hope are trying to do something that has never been done in Georgia before. Full Moon Coop is also a group of people who are working together to change the relationship between people, communities, and land. I hope that by sharing their experiences, and empowering the young people to lead the way, they can help each other get where they are going." As Hirsch mentioned, when the People of Hope do purchase their own land, they will become the first cooperatively owned mobile home park in Georgia.

Education is an integral goal of the Full Moon Cooperative, and the knowledge and leadership skills being developed are something that the participants can bring to their homes, schools, and communities. This summer is about planting the seeds of a beneficial relationship. The future will be about making it grow.
