Programas en español en la Biblioteca Publica de AthensPor Stacey O. Ferrelle & Tiffany M. Tooley ¿Dónde en Athens tienes acceso a miles de libros, películas y revistas? ¿Dónde en Athens puedes contactar amigos y familiares alrededor del mundo vía Internet? ¿Dónde pueden los padres traer a sus hijos para una tarde de diversión y escapar del calor del verano? Puedes hacer todas estas cosas y más en la Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Athens-Clarke ubicada en la calle Baxter, número 2025. Y lo mejor de todo esto es que la mayoría de los servicios son gratuitos para las personas que tienen la tarjeta de la biblioteca. Cada día, la biblioteca presta un importante servicio a la comunidad ofreciendo acceso a recursos literarios y tecnológicos para todas las edades. Aunque los servicios y materiales de la biblioteca están principalmente en inglés, el personal está trabajando para prestarlos en español también. Desde programas de computadoras en español hasta materiales para clases de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL por sus siglas en inglés) y libros y videos en español, la biblioteca tiene algo para todos los gustos y necesidades. En un esfuerzo por llegar a la comunidad hispana, la biblioteca pública ha comenzado a ofrecer programas para las personas que hablan español. La biblioteca recientemente ofreció una serie de películas y debates en Oasis, un centro comunitario dirigido por monjas de la orden de ‘Handmaidens of the Sacred Heart of Jesus’, en el vecindario de casas móbiles de Pine Wood donde la mayoría de los residentes son de origen hispano. Actualmente, la biblioteca organiza un programa de seis semanas de historia oral designado para jóvenes hispanos. Los jóvenes están recopilando historias familiares acerca de costumbres, celebraciones y tradiciones de sus países de origen. Los jóvenes presentarán y preservarán las historias en libros que crearán durante el programa. La biblioteca también ha comenzado a ofrecer un nuevo programa de cuentos en español cada sábado a las 2 p.m. en la biblioteca. Este programa de 40 minutos está diseñado para niños y sus niñeras. Visite la biblioteca con frecuencia para saber más sobre nuevos programas en español tales como debates sobre libros y clases de computadora. Todos los programas están abiertos al público. ¿Cómo sacar libros y videos de la biblioteca? Todo lo que necesitas en una tarjeta de la biblioteca y puede obtener una en la oficina de información en el primer piso y es gratis para los residentes de Georgia. Para obtener una tarjeta sólo necesita rellenar una solicitud, disponible en español e inglés, y enseñar un documento de identificación con foto, nombre y dirección. Licencia de conducir, identificación del estado o tarjeta militar también son aceptadas. El personal de la biblioteca siempre está dispuesto a ayudarle. Las personas con tarjeta de la biblioteca, pueden sacar libros gratis por hasta 14 días y películas por 7 días. Cualquier material que se regrese a la biblioteca después de la fecha tope establecidad, habrá una multa de 25 centavos por libro y un dólar por película. La Biblioteca Pública de Athens está abierta de lunes a jueves de 9 a.m. a 9 p.m., los viernes de 9 a.m. a 6 p.m., los sábados de 12 p.m. a 6 p.m. y los domingos de 2 p.m. a 6 p.m. La biblioteca es la oficina principal del Sistema de Bibliotecas de Athens, el cual incluye nueve bibliotecas, entre las cuales está el nuevo Centro de Recursos Lay Park y el East Athens. Programs in Spanish at the Athens Public LibraryBy Stacey O. Ferrelle & Tiffany M. Tooley Where in Athens do you have access to thousands of books, movies, and magazines? Where in Athens can you contact friends and family around the world via the Internet? Where in Athens can parents bring their children for a fun afternoon escape from the summer heat? You can do all of this and more at the Athens-Clarke County Library, located at 2025 Baxter Street. What’s the best part of all? Most library services and materials are free to cardholders! Open daily, the Athens-Clarke County Library fills an important role within the community by providing access to an ever-growing supply of literary and technological resources for all ages. While the Library’s services and materials are primarily in English, Library staff strives to provide current resources for the Spanish-speaking community. From Spanish-language computers to English as a Second Language (ESL) materials and Spanish-language books and videos, the library has something for everyone. In an effort to reach out to the Hispanic community, the public library has begun offering programming specifically for Spanish-speakers. The Library recently offered a Spanish film and discussion series at the Oasis, a community resource center staffed by sisters of the order Handmaidens of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the Pine Woods North Community where the majority of residents are of Hispanic origin. The Library is currently hosting a 6-week series of oral history programs designed for Hispanic teens. Teens are gathering family stories of their customs, celebrations, and traditions with an emphasis on their homeland. The teens will present and preserve the stories though scrapbooks that they will create during the program. The Library has also begun offering a new Spanish language story time with a craft project every Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Library. This 40-minute program is designed for preschoolers and their caregivers. Check the library regularly for new Spanish language programming such as book discussion groups and computer skill classes. All programs are free and open to the public. What if you just want to check out a few books and videos? All that is required is a library card and it can be obtained from the Circulation desk on the first floor and are free for Georgia residents. To obtain a card, simply complete a short application, available in both Spanish and English, and show photo identification that states your name and address. Driver’s licenses, state issued identification, and military identification are all acceptable. Library staff members are always on hand to offer assistance. Library cardholders can check out books for up to 14 days and movies for seven days free of charge. For materials returned to the library after their due date, minimal fines are assessed, from twenty-five cents per book, to a dollar per movie. The Athens-Clarke County Library is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The library is headquarters of the Athens Regional Library System, which includes nine branch libraries, including the new Lay Park Resource Center and the East Athens Resource Center.
