Lo que necesitas saber para ir a la universidad

El peor error que una persona puede cometer es dejar para ganar dinero en un trabajo que no será para toda la vida.

La mayoría de las personas que abandonan sus estudios terminan arrepintiéndose al poco tiempo y tratan de aconsejar a los demás que no lo hagan diciéndoles, "si no hubiera dejado de estudiar no estuviera trabajando tanto como lo hago ahora" y "me arrepiento, fue el peor error de mi vida".

Está comprobado que las personas que terminan la escuela ganan entre 50 y 70 por ciento más.

Ir a la escuela y graduarse no es fácil y aunque asistir a clases cada día es importante, no es suficiente para terminar los estudios y poder asistir a la universidad.

Algunos pasos que deben tomar los estudiantes de secundaria son:

1) Comunicación con el consejero: durante los cuatro años de escuela, el mejor amigo del estudiante es el consejero. El consejero le orientará y dirá cuál es el próximo paso a seguir pero el estudiante tiene el deber de ir a hablar con él.

2) Elegir las clases: se deben tomar clases como matemáticas, literatura, ciencias, historia e inglés porque estas clases son requeridas. Cuando se han tomado las clases requeridas para graduarse, entonces se pueden tomar las electivas. Por eso es mejor empezar a tomar las clases académicas en los primeros tres años para que el último año sea más fácil y tranquilo. También es importante elegir clases de niveles avanzados como ACP o AP porque las universidades quieren saber que el estudiante se está esforzando. La clases avanzadas son más difíciles y las universidades lo saben.

3) Información sobre los examenes requeridos para graduarse a tiempo: en la escuela secundaria existen ciertos exámenes que el estudiante debe tomar para poder obtener un diploma. Estos exámenes (GHSGT) se deben tomar el tercer o último año de estudios. Para poder obtener el diploma se nesesita pasar cinco exámenes: matemáticas, ciencas, historia, literatura o inglés y escritura. Con sólo reprobar uno, no se obtiene el diploma y sólo se recibe un certificado por haber asistido a la escuela durante cuatro años. Otros exámenes como el SAT y ACT son necesarios para ingresar a la universidad. Se debe registrar a tiempo y se pueden tomar cuantas veces quiera el estudiante para mejorar los resultados. Existen más exámenes como el PSAT, parecido al SAT. Por su parte, el ASVAB es necesario para poder ingresar a las fuerzas armadas de los EE.UU. Para más información sobre otros exámenes y fechas es importante hablar con el consejero.

4) Información sobre universidades: es importante saber sobre el proceso de admisión, precios, diferentes carreras y cuándo son las fechas tope para solicitar el ingreso a la universidad deseada. También es importante saber si es privada o pública, qué deportes se ofrecen, la ciudad, etc.

5) Informacion sobre becas y préstamos del gobierno: las becas son muy importantes en los EE.UU. Los estudios superiores son muy costosos pero existen compañías y organizaciones que ayudan a los estudiantes a asistir a la universidad con becas. Es impotante empezar a buscar becas y solicitarlas lo antes posible. El consejero sabe qué becas están disponibles y los requisitos para solicitarlas. Una beca muy importante en el estado de Georgia es HOPE. Para poder solicitar este beca y mantenerla, el estudiante debe tener por lo menos 3.0 de nota y ser residente en Georgia.

6) Dar servicio a la comunidad, involucrarse en los deportes y clubes de la escuela: las universidades, compañías y organizaciones quieren que sus solicitantes participen en actividades extracurriculares, ya sea en la comunidad o escuela. Ayudar a organizaciones sin fines de lucro, visitar hospitales o simplemente pasar tiempo con enfermos y ancianos, al igual que participar en los diferentes clubes que existen en la escuela, influye a la hora de elegir qué estudiante es admitido.

Estas son sólo algunas sugerencias pero es importante compartir preguntas e inquietudes con el consejero. Es importante conocer al consejero desde un punto de vista personal para que cuando escriba la carta de recomendación, hable del estudiante no sólo como estudiante, sino también como persona. ¡Aprovecha las oportunidad! ¡Querer es poder! En este país todo es posible. ¡Sólo tenemos una vida, aprovéchala al máximo!

What You Need to Know to Go to College

The worst mistake a person can make is to drop out of school to earn money in a job that is not going to last forever.

Most people who abandon their education end up regretting it in a short time and try to advise others not to do the same by telling them, "If I hadn't dropped out, I wouldn't be working as much or as hard as I am now" or simply "I regret it — it was the worst mistake of my life."

The reality is that people with high school diplomas earn 50-70 percent more than people who have not earned a diploma.

Going to school and graduating is not easy. Even though attending classes every day is important, one must do more than just that to finish high school and attend college.

Some steps that need to be taken by high school students are:

1) Communication with the counselor. Throughout high school, the student's best friend is the counselor, who will advise about which steps come next. It is up to the student, however, to visit and talk to the counselor.

2) Choosing classes. Students must take classes in such subjects as math, literature, science, and social studies because they are academically required. Once required classes have been taken, electives can be taken. It's better to start taking required classes in the first three years so that the senior year will be more tranquil. It's also very important to take advanced classes such as ACP or AP because that's what colleges look for — an indication that you challenged yourself. Advanced classes are quite difficult, and colleges know this.

3) Be informed about all the exams needed in order to graduate on time. In high school there are various exams a student needs to take in order to obtain a diploma. These exams (GHSGT) must be taken during the junior or senior year. To earn your diploma, you need to pass a total of five exams in math, science, social studies, literature, and writing skills. Failing only one of these exams prevents you from receiving a real diploma - instead you will only receive a certificate documenting your four years of attendance. Other exams, such as the SAT and ACT, are also needed for applying to college in the U.S. Students need to register for these tests in a timely way, but can also take them as frequently as they wish to improve scores. There are also other exams like the PSAT, a pre-SAT. The ASVAB test is also required to join any of the U.S. Armed Forces. To find out more about how and when these tests are taken, talk to your counselor.

4) Information about universities. It's important to know about the admissions process, tuition costs, career tracks and deadlines if you want to apply on time to a desired university. It's also important to know whether the college is a private or public institution, what financial aid programs it offers and about the city it is located in.

5) Information on scholarships and government loans. Scholar-ships are very important in the U.S. Studying at a university is very expensive but there are companies and organizations that award scholarships to attend college. It's important to begin looking for these scholarships early and apply before the deadlines. Your counselor knows what scholarships are available and what requirements they have. An important scholarship in Georgia is the HOPE scholarship. To be able to obtain and keep the scholarship, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be a Georgia resident.

6) Involvement with clubs, sports, and other organizations in school or the community. Universities and other scholarship granting organizations seek applicants who participate in extracurricular activities in their community and school. Helping non-profit organizations, visiting hospitals or simply spending time with sick people or the elderly as well as participating in various clubs at school all help your chances of being admitted with a scholarship.

These are just some recommendations, but it is important to share any questions you may have with the counselor. It is important to get to know the counselor personally. By doing this, he will be able to write about you as a person and not just as a student. Take advantage of these opportunities. Whatever you may want is possible - in this country, everything is possible! You only get one life to live, so be sure to make the most out of it!
