El Centro de Salud Mercy

Todos los lunes de seis a nueve de la noche, un grupo de doctores prestan servicios médicos gratuitos en Athens a personas de bajos recursos y sin seguro médico. El Centro de Salud Mercy abrió sus puertas el 10 de septiembre del 2001 y desde entonces ofrece ayuda médica, dental y medicinas a personas que no pueden pagar por un seguro de salud.

Los pacientes son atentidos por orden de llegada. "Hay personas que llegan tres o cuatro horas antes para poder ser los primeros", explica Aida Robles, intérprete voluntaria que trabaja para el centro.

Muchos hispanos hacen uso de estos servicios. "De las 18 o 20 personas que atendemos cada lunes, 10 o 12 son hispanas. Cada vez vienen más hispanos", dice Robles quien es mexicana y lleva cinco meses trabajando con el centro.

El centro también provee a los pacientes con medicinas. "Todos los miércoles por la

mañana damos medicinas a aquellas personas que las necesitan y vienen a buscarlas aquí al centro", explica Neal Burkhalter, estudiante de medicina en la Universidad de Georgia.

El centro también ofrece la oportunidad de ser voluntario y trabajar muy de cerca con la comunidad. Estudiantes de medicina pueden realizar prácticas mientras observan el trabajo de los doctores. "Los estudiantes de medicina podemos trabajar en conjunto con los doctores y aprender de su trabajo, ayudar a los pacientes a registrarse, crear un enlace con los pacientes a través de la coversación y sobre todo escuchar lo que tienen que decir", admite Burkhalter quién se gradua en Mayo.

Mercy Health Center

Every Monday from 6 to 9 PM, a group of doctors provide medical services free of charge to people in Athens with low income and without health insurance. Mercy Health Center opened its doors on Sept. 10, 2001 and since then has offered medical and dental health services to people who either can't afford or do not have an opportunity to receive health insurance.

Patients are tended to on a first come, first served basis. "Some people come three or four hours early in order to be first in line," explains Aida Robles, a volunteer interpreter who works with the center.

Many Hispanics use these services. "Out of the 18 or 20 people we serve each Monday, 10 or 12 are Hispanics. More Hispanics come every time," noted Robles, who is Mexican and has been working in the center for five months.

The center also provides prescription medications to its patients. "Every Wednesday morning we give medicines to those who need them and come here to get them," explains Neal Burkhalter, a pre-med student at the University of Georgia.

The center offers the opportunity of becoming a volunteer and working closely with the community. Medical students can hold internships and learn their craft by following the doctors at the clinic. "Medical students can work in conjunction with doctors and learn from their work. We can also help patients check-in and create a link with the patient through conversation and most importantly listen to what they have to say," said Burkhalter, who graduates in May.
