Del sabor original de la tierra

A mucha gente le gusta comer los platos de sus países de origen — platos hechos con los ingredientes que dan un sabor particular. Cuando los inmigrantes vienen a los Estados Unidos, no pueden conseguir las aceitunas, aceites, canela, tomillo, pimienta y otros muchos productos típicos de su tierra. Pero una agencia federal presta servicio a los campesinos hispanos en los EE.UU. y así ayuda a los consumidores a conseguir esos productos tradicionales.

La Agencia de Servicios Rurales del Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos tiene como función "ayudar al agricultor a poder triunfar respetando el medio ambiente", según Cynthia Valles, puertoriqueña y especialista en asuntos públicos de la Agencia de Servicios Rurales en Athens.

La agencia ofrece ayuda con préstamos de bajo interés, en caso de desastres naturales, organización y administración además de financiamiento si el agricultor no puede vender toda su cosecha.

"Si un agricultor no consigue un préstamo en el banco, viene a nosotros y le damos un préstamo con bajo interés. Debe tener como máximo $2.5 millones en ganancias si quiere conseguir un préstamo en nuestra agencia", admite Valles quien supervisa cuatro estados del sur además de Puerto Rico.

La agencia trabaja desde las oficinas y en el campo. "Soy portavoz y explico los programas porque hablo español y buscamos ayudar al agricultor hispano", dice Valles quien tiene 12 años de experiencia trabajando en el Departemento de Agricultura. Valles admite que los campesinos hispanos no suelen ir a las reuniones de agricultores porque son ilegales o no entienden los formularios del gobierno.

Los campesinos con granjas de pollos y vacas también pueden beneficiarse de los servicios que presta la agencia. "Nuestros clientes venden productos orgánicos que son difíciles de conseguir en restaurantes y otros establecimientos. Tenemos programas y ayudas para todos los mercados", admite Valles quien lleva viviendo en Athens desde 1994.

La agencia también intenta llegar a los más jóvenes a través de los clubes agrícolas en las escuelas, ferias locales y exhibiciones. "Tenemos un programa para jóvenes en el cual ofrecemos miles de dólares", dice Valles. "Animo a todas las personas, jóvenes y adultos, que quieran ser agricultores que vengan a verme porque estoy aquí para ayudar a la comunidad hispana y agrícola".

Most people like to eat the dishes of their homelands — dishes made with special ingredients that impart a particular flavor. When immigrants come to the United States, they often can't find the olives, oils, cinnamon, thyme, pepper and other typical products from their home countries. But a federal agency serves Hispanic farmers in the United States and, therefore, helps consumers find those traditional products.

The Farm Service Agency, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, seeks to "help farmers to succeed while respecting the environment," said Cynthia Valles, Puerto Rican and public affairs specialist for the Farm Service Agency in Athens.

The agency offers help with low interest loans, natural disasters, organization and administration and financing if farmers can't sell their harvests.

"If a farmer doesn't get a loan at the bank, they come to us and we give him a low interest rate loan. The farmer must have no more than $2,5 million in profits if he wants get a loan with the agency," says Valles, who supervises four southern states plus Puerto Rico.

The agency works from the office and at farms. "I am a speaker and I explain the programs because I speak Spanish and we are looking to help Hispanic farmers," said Valles, who has 12 years of experience working for the Department of Agriculture. Valles said Hispanic farmers don't usually go to farmers' meetings because they are illegal or don't understand the government's paperwork.

Farmers with chicken farms and cows can also benefit from services offered by the agency.

"Our clients sell organic products that are difficult to find in restaurants and other businesses. We have programs and aid for niche markets," said Valles.

The agency also tries to reach out to youths through agricultural school clubs, local fairs and exhibitions. "I encourage all people, young and adults who want to become farmers to come to see me, because I am here to help the Hispanic community and farmers," Valles said.
