Negocios Locales

Local Businesses
A Very Healthy Place in AthensBy Joanie Davidson Founded in 1975 as the first natural food store in Asheville, N.C., "Dinner for the Earth" became quite a success. Changing their name to "Earth Fare" in 1995, the company began to expand. Soon they began looking for a locale in Georgia. In October of 1999 Earth Fare opened its doors to the Athens community. "Athens was the perfect choice because it is a great community oriented town. In addition, we discovered there was a great consumer need for a place like Earth Fare. Atlanta was a poor choice because of Whole Foods, etc." says Sham Gad, marketing coordinator for the Athens location. "Earth Fare has been welcomed by the community. We have blended well with the co-ops and other natural foods stores such as Phoenix Natural Foods." Earth Fare offers Athens a wide variety of services and products. The produce department boasts of colorful organic fruits and vegetables, some of which are supplied by local farmers. In the bakery, all of the breads and pastries are made using unbleached flour and sugar. They offer hormone-free meat and poultry as well as a huge assortment of seafood that is brought in fresh six days a week. In an effort to reduce waste, Earth Fare offers herbs, flours, spices, pastas and snacks by weight. Customers can purchase just the amount of product that they need. They stock cheeses from around the world. They also sell an array of vitamins and health supplements as well as beauty products. But their range of services goes beyond groceries. The Earth Fare staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They are on hand at all times to field any questions from customers. One of the most popular draws to Earth Fare is their café. They offer a hot bar, salad bar and sushi bar, with all of the food prepared daily. Customers can dine in their relaxed indoor café or an outside eating area. The café features the healthy ingredients from around the store. The diverse cooking staff offers food thats sure to satisfy every taste. "Being healthy is more than just eating right," says Gad when talking about the many activities Earth Fare offers the community. "We have classes on yoga, the benefits of raw food, massage therapy and many other things." They offer several free classes to the public on a wide range of topics. The business is also very involved in community events such as the Twilight Criterium and local school events. Earth Fare is not just a grocery chain; it is a local marketplace that is concerned with its customers needs. Whether it is offering foods and products that are hard to find or having a knowledgeable, helpful staff on hand at all times, Earth Fare strives to serve the Athens community. MAY EVENTS:
