¡Futbol en Athens!Por Enrique Carrión 
El domingo 6 de abril se inauguró la 7ª edición del torneo de fútbol Liga Soccer en los campos del Complejo Deportivo Holland en la calle Vincent de Athens. La liga, formada por nueve equipos, cuenta con el patrocinio de Athens Eco Latino. Liga Soccer es el punto de referencia para los amantes del fútbol en el Condado de Clarke. No sólo hispanos conforman los equipos, también hay jugadores estadounidenses, europeos, africanos y otras partes del mundo los cuales combinan sus cualidades para dar un gran espectáculo. Los partidos se llevan a cabo cada domingo a las 9 y 11 de la mañana y cuentan con la presencia de muchos espectadores entre familiares, amigos y segui-dores de fútbol. Los equipos participantes este año son: Guerrero, Real Centroamérica, Gladiators, Cruz Blanca, Club Fútbol UEFA, UCAT, Michuacán, Vaqueros e Internacional los cuales juegan dos torneo al año, primero en otoño y después en primavera.
Zankie juega en la posición de último hombre, es decir, defensa. Los defensores tienen la tarea de detener las jugadas de ataque del equipo rival, cueste lo que cueste. "Mi filosofía es: pasa el jugador o la pelota, pero nunca los dos juntos. Me ha funcionado hasta ahora", admite Zankie quien llegó a Estados Unidos hace 18 años. Liga Soccer es relativamente joven comparada a otras ligas que han estado jugándose en Atlanta y Gainesville desde hace más tiempo y aunque en Athens también existen dos ligas de jugadores hispanos, Zankie explica que Liga Soccer es la que más le gusta, "Lo que más me gusta es la competencia. En esta liga hay más calidad y está mejor organizada. Nosotros estamos registrados y eso nos da prestigio". Zankie juega para el equipo Internacional el cual adoptó este nombre debido al gran número de jugadores de países como Brasil, Alemania, europeos y americanos en general además de los hispanos. Internacional se ha proclamado campeón de la liga en cuatro ocasiones incluyendo los dos últimos torneos, el de primavera y otoño. Zankie también es seguidor de las mejores ligas del mundo como la Premier League inglesa, el Calcio italiano y la Liga española. "Mi equipo favorito es el Manchester United. Me encanta la Liga Premier porque en tres toques llegan al otro arco", dice Zankie quien también sigue la Copa Libertadores de América. AEL |

Soccer in Athens!Por Enrique Carrión On Sunday, April 6, the 7th annual Liga Soccer tournament commenced on the fields of the Holland Sport Complex located on Vincent Street in Athens. Athens Eco Latino sponsors the league, which is composed of nine individual participating teams. Liga Soccer is a fantastic meeting place for soccer lovers in Clarke County. The players on the teams are far from exclusively Hispanic - there are Americans, Europeans, Africans and people from many other parts of the world who join in the collaborative competition to offer great soccer performances. Matches take place every Sunday morning at 9 and 11. At each game there are a great number of supporters including relatives, friends, and soccer fans. Teams taking part in this year’s tournament are Guerrero, Real Centroamérica, Gladiators, Cruz Blanca, Club Fútbol UEFA, UCAT, Michuacán, Vaqueros and Internacional. The teams play two tournaments each year; the first one the fall followed by another in the spring. One player familiar with the league in Athens is Zankie Guerra. Zankie has been a member of the league since it started in 1997. Ecuadorian by birth and Pana-manian by heart, Zankie has been playing soccer his whole life. "My mom used to tell me that when I was a child I put toys aside and would go to play with a ball," explains Zankie, who went to live in Panama when he was five. Zankie plays the last man position, defense. Defensemen are in charge of stopping the opposing team’s offense. "My philosophy is: either the player or the ball may pass, but never the two together. It hasn’t failed me yet," admits Zankie, who came to the States 18 years ago. Liga Soccer is relatively young compared to other leagues that have been playing in Atlanta and Gainesville for a longer time. Although Athens has two leagues with Hispanic players, Zankie explains that Liga Soccer is his favorite. "What I like most is the competition. In this league there is more quality and it is better organized. We are registered and it gives us prestige." Zankie plays for Team Interna-cional, a team which derived its name directly from the large number of its players who come from countries around the globe. Team Internacional has been the league champion four times, including wins in the last two tournaments. Zankie is also a fan of some of the best soccer leagues in the world such as the English Premier League, the Calcio in Italy and the Spanish La Liga. "My favorite team is [England’s] Manchester United. I love the Premiere League because it takes three passes and they reach the other goal," says Zankie, who is also a fan of the South American Cup. Un jugador que conoce muy bien la liga en Athens es Zankie Guerra. Zankie ha sido miembro de la liga desde que ésta se inaguró en 1997. Este ecuatoriano de nacimiento pero panameño de corazón lleva jugando fútbol toda su vida. "Mi mamá me decía que cuando era pequeño ponía los juguetes a un lado y después me ponía a jugar pelota", explica Zankie quien se fue a vivir a Panamá a los cinco años.
