Manuel Robledo: El auténtico sabor del exito

Hace diez años Manuel Robledo abrió el Super-mercado Los Compadres en la Avenida Prince con la intención de traerle a la gente hispana productos de sus países nativos. Después de tener éxito con la apertura del supermercado, abrió el restaurante Agua Linda al lado de Los Compadres en 1999. Desde entonces ha creado un nuevo supermercado Los Compadres en la Calle Commerce de Athens y un nuevo restaurante Agua Linda en la ciudad de Commerce.

Este empresario mexicano nació en Atolinga, Zacatecas y llegó a los Estados Unidos en 1969. Después de vivir en Gainesville, Georgia, vino a conocer Athens y se mudó en 1992. "Andando con un amigo que ya vivía aquí, me enseñó que había una tiendita en aquel tiempo, solamente una tiendita, que era de unos señores del Perú y vi que les faltaban muchos productos que a nosotros los mexicanos nos gusta tener en casa. Simplemente, por ejemplo, chile jalapeño, flautillos y todo eso. Los mexicanos estábamos muy acostumbrados a todo eso y no lo había aquí. Entonces, de ahí fue donde nació la idea de poner un supermercado para así traerle a toda la gente hispana, no solamente a los mexicanos, sino a toda la gente de habla hispana, productos de sus países natales", dice Robledo.

Cinco años después de abrir Los Compadres, creó el restaurante Agua Linda, cuyo nombre es la traducción de la palabra tolteca ‘Atolinga' (el pueblo natal de Robledo). El menú se basó en comidas hechas de recetas propias de Robledo. Cada comida fue estudiada detalladamente para que fuera única del restaurante, según Robledo. "No hay un platillo que no sea complicado, pero vale la pena para que nuestros clientes se vayan satisfechos. No tenemos nada para calentar; para nosotros, todo es fresco. He tenido cocineros que presumen de ser muy buenos cocineros y cuando llegan aquí, lo primero que dicen es ‘Tu cocina es muy difícil'. Pero vale la pena".

Agua Linda se enorgullece del sabor verdadero de México. Una cliente frecuente, Irma Hernández de Veracruz, México, dice, "El ir a Agua Linda es disfrutar el sabor de México fuera de casa. Cada vez que voy, no pierdo la oportunidad de pedir una rica horchata para saborear cualquiera de los platillos en el menú".

Robledo consigue la mayoría de los productos auténticos para sus negocios de empresas que importan mercancía de países latinoamericanos. Las verduras y frutas son traídas de México, Florida y California. Los productos lácteos son traídos directamente de México. Utiliza los servicios de varias compañías en Atlanta que le surten productos importados.

En el 2001, Robledo abrió el segundo supermercado Los Compadres, ubicado en la Calle Commerce de Athens. En el 2003, abrió el segundo restaurante Agua Linda, esta vez en Commerce. Con el apoyo de su familia, logra encargarse de sus diferentes negocios. "Siempre me he considerado que soy una persona activa y pues a veces estoy un rato en un lugar, a veces estoy en otro, y así. La base principal ha sido mi familia, ya que somos seis en la familia".

Robledo siente que la mayor recompensa de su trabajo es proveer ganancias a sus empleados. "Yo creo que la mayor satisfacción para mí es tener tanta gente que me conoce, tanta gente que viene a mis negocios, tener tantos empleados que dependen de mí, que dependen de nuestro negocio. Y realmente yo nunca, nunca soñé que un día iba a tener esa responsabilidad de tener tanta gente que debo deber por el futuro de ellos".

Entre unos 60 empleados de Robledo, Omar Ibañez Abundez empezó trabajando para Robledo barriendo el estacionamiento, luego limpiando mesas, luego lavando platos, después ayudando en la cocina y ahora ha llegado a ser el encargado de la cocina de Agua Linda en la Avenida Prince. Para Abundez, Robledo es más que un hombre de negocios listo, es un jefe comprensivo. "Una de las experiencias mías ha sido que él me ha ayudado mucho. Me ha aguantado mucho también; me tuvo mucha paciencia. Aquí casi a diario aprendo algo nuevo", comenta.

Robledo añade, "A las otras personas que quieran poner un negocio, pues claro que las animo. Que le echen ganas. En realidad estamos en el país de oportunidades y debemos apro-vechar nuestra estancia aquí. Entonces, de mi parte, si alguien desea ayuda, en toda confianza, se la puedo brindar. El que persiste alcanza".

Manuel Robledo: The Authentic Taste of Success

Ten years ago, Manuel Robledo opened the supermarket Los Compadres on Prince Avenue with the intention of bringing Hispanics products from their native countries. After the supermarket's successful opening, he opened the restaurant Agua Linda beside Los Compadres in 1999. Since then, he has opened a second location of Los Compadres on Commerce Road and a second Agua Linda in Commerce.

This Mexican entrepreneur was born in Atolinga, Zacatecas and came to the United States in 1969. After living in Gainesville, Georgia, he visited Athens and then moved to Athens in 1992. "I was walking with a friend who already lived here and he showed me that there was a little store back then, just one little store, that was owned by some Peruvians. I saw that they were missing a lot of products that we Mexicans like to have at home. Simply, for example, chile jalapeño, flautillos, and all that. We Mexicans were very accustomed to all of that and none of it was here. So, that was the beginning of my idea to start a supermarket to bring all the Hispanics, not only the Mexicans, but all the Spanish-speaking people, products from their home countries," says Robledo.

Five years after opening Los Compadres, Robledo started the restaurant Agua Linda, whose name is the Spanish translation of the Toltecan word ‘Atolinga' (meaning ‘beautiful water'), which is Robledo's birthplace. The menu was based on food made according to Robledo's own recipes. Every menu item was studied in detail so that it would be unique to the restaurant, according to Robledo.

"There's not one dish that isn't complicated, but it's worth it so that our customers are satisfied. We don't heat up any pre-prepared food; everything is fresh. I've had cooks that consider themselves to be very good but when they start here the first thing they say is ‘Your cooking is hard!' But it's worth it."

Agua Linda prides itself on its real taste of Mexico. Irma Hernández, a loyal customer originally from Veracruz, Mexico, says, "Going to Agua Linda is about enjoying the flavors of home away from home. Every time I go I take advantage of the opportunity to drink a horchata in order to savor the great items on the menu."

Robledo acquires the majority of the authentic products for his businesses from importers. Fruits and vegetables come from Mexico, Florida, and California. Dairy products come directly from Mexico. Robledo uses the services of several companies in Atlanta that supply him with these imported products.

In 2001, Robledo opened the second Los Compadres location on Commerce Road in Athens. Last year, he opened a second Agua Linda location in Com-merce. With his family's support, he is able to maintain the different locations of his businesses. "I've always considered myself to be an active person, and well, sometimes I'm at one location for a while, sometimes I'm at another, and so on. The main base has been my family, since we're a family of six."

Robledo feels that his job's biggest reward is being able to provide a living to his employees. "I think that the biggest satisfaction for me is having so many people that know me, so many people that come to my businesses, so many employees that depend on me, that depend on our business. I really never, ever dreamed that one day I would have the re-sponsibility of having so many people whose future I should look out for."

Among Robledo's 60 or so employees, Omar Ibañez Abundez started working for Robledo by sweeping the parking lot, then bussing tables, then washing dishes, then helping in the kitchen, and has now become the head chef of Agua Linda on Prince Avenue. To Abundez, Robledo is more than just a smart businessman, he is an understanding boss. "In my experience with him, he has helped me a lot. He's put up with me too; he had a lot of patience with me. I learn something new almost every day here," he comments.

Robledo adds, "I encourage everyone who wants to open their own business. Put forth the effort. In reality, we are in the country of opportunities and we should take advantage of our being here. So, if anyone needs help, by all means, I can help. He who persists succeeds."
