Deportes El boxeo, ¡un deporte para todos! Por José Romero El Athens Arena presentó el sábado, 24 de enero, el Campeonato the Boxeo Amateur con un rotundo éxito. El evento contó con la participación de 38 boxeadores de distintas nacionalidades y diferentes partes de Georgia con edades comprendidas entre los 10 y 30 años. Más de 1.000 espectadores presenciaron el evento que comenzó a las 7 de la noche y finalizó la 1 de la madrugada. El boxeo es un deporte bien arraigado en Latinoamérica y esto se vió reflejado en el evento donde 17 de los 38 participantes eran de origen latino. Otro dato que llama la atención fue la corta edad de algunos boxeadores como Jeriko Galloway y Alfredo Monzalvo (ambos de Atlanta) que con tan sólo 10 y 11 años respectivamente ya están participando en este deporte. También es de resaltar la presencia de las chicas de 13 años Maribel Vásquez (Gainesville) y Amanda Sierra (La Grange), demostrando que el boxeo es un deporte para todos, sin importar la edad y el sexo. Entre otros peleadores, debemos mencionar a los participantes en la categoría de las 122 libras Rafael Elías y Salvador Elizarraraz, ambos de Athens. Pero no todo fue boxeo. A las 11 de la noche, la banda de rock Phoenix Down hizo su presentación creando un ambiente de fiesta luego de las peleas. "Aquí en el Athens Arena nos dedicamos a la divulgación del boxeo en la ciudad de Athens, nuestras puertas están abiertas al público desde la cinco y media de la tarde hasta las nueve de la noche y las clases comienzan a las siete, pero también usamos nuestras instalaciones para la realización de conciertos, especialmente para el público hispano, y fiestas privadas", dijo Chris Jordan, dueño de la arena. El Athens Arena es parte de la Asociación de Boxeo Amateur de Georgia, garantizando a los participantes de las competiciones que los resultados serán registrados. By José Romero The Amateur Boxing Championship that took place at the Athens Arena on Saturday, January 24, was an absolute success. The event had the participation of 38 boxers from different countries and different parts of Georgia, ranging in age between 10 and 30. More than 1,000 spectators were present at the event that started at 7 in the night and ended at 1 in the morning. Boxing is a deep-rooted sport in Latin America, and this was reflected in the event by the 17 out of 38 participants that were Latino. Another number that caught people's attention was the young age of some of the boxers, such as Jeriko Galloway and Alfredo Monzalvo (both from Atlanta), who were only 10 and 11 years old respectively, and yet were able to participate in the event. The presence of two girls also stood out; Maribel Vásquez (Gainesville) and Amanda Sierra (La Grange) proved that boxing is a sport for everyone, regardless of age or sex. Among other fighters, the participants in the 122-pound category Rafael Elías and Salvador Elizarraraz, both from Athens, deserve to be mentioned. But the whole night wasn't boxing. At 11, the rock band Phoenix Down performed, creating a party atmosphere following the fights. "Here at Athens Arena we are dedicated to popularizing boxing in the city of Athens, our doors are open to the public from five thirty in the afternoon until nine at night. Classes start at seven, but we also use our facilities for concerts, especially for Hispanics, and private parties," said Chris Jordan, owner of the arena. The Athens Arena is part of the Amateur Boxing Association of Georgia, guaranteeing the participants of the competitions that the results will be registered.
