Recursos comunitarios La Cruz Roja extiende una mano Texto y fotos por Enrique Carrión La Cruz Roja de Athens fue creada en 1917. Desde entonces, ha ayudado a personas, no sólo en Athens y el resto de los Estados Unidos, sino también en otros países durante la Primera y Segunda Guerra Mundial y la Guerra de Vietnam, entre otros conflictos. Actual-mente, la oficina local trabaja como enlace entre las familias del este de Gerogia y sus parientes en el ejército sirviendo en Irak. La Cruz Roja de Athens también está intentando cumplir otra misión: llegar a la comunidad hispana de Athens. La misión de la Cruz Roja no es sólo ayudar y asistir a personas necesitadas pero también educarlas en cómo actuar en caso de desastres naturales o humanos mediante clases de resucitación y primeros auxilios en español a individuos y compañías. El departamento de respuesta a desastres tiene dos empleados bilingües. También se enseñan cursos en calidad del agua y primeros auxilios a estudiantes de segundo grado en el Distrito Escolar del Condado Athens-Clarke, con la participación de un gran número de niños hispanos. "Tenemos algunas personas bilingües trabajando con nosotros pero siempre estamos buscando voluntarios quienes desean ayudarnos como enlace entre nosotros y la comunidad hispana de Athens", dijo Peggy Crowe, directora de la Cruz Roja del Este de Georgia. "Trabajamos muy de cerca con Stella Sailors y los Servicios Sociales Católicos. Ellos tienen mucha experiencia trabajando y sirviendo a los hispanos en Athens y siempre están preparados para ayudarnos". Hay dos oficinas de la Cruz Roja en Athens: una oficina principal desde donde se preparan los cursos y servicios y también una oficina donde la gente puede ir a donar sangre du-rante todo el año. Aunque las oficinas locales no están completamente listas para responder a emergencias que tengan que ver con la población de habla hispana de Athens, se están tomando los pasos necesarios para llegar a esa meta. "Aquí en Athens, ofrecemos cursos e información en español y tenemos personal bilingüe para ayudar a los hispanos", dijo Kristy Burton, especialista en salud y servicios de seguridad. "Animamos a las personas bilingües, especialmente a los estudiantes de español, a ser voluntarios. Es una gran oportunidad de practicar español en situaciones reales y el trabajar como voluntario en la comunidad queda muy bien en el curriculum". Community Resources The Red Cross Lends A Helping Hand Text and Photos by Enrique Carrión The Athens Chapter of the Red Cross was created in 1917. Since then, it has helped people not only in Athens and the rest of the United States, but also overseas during both War World I and II and the Vietnam War, among other conflicts. Presently, the local chapter works as a link between families living in East Georgia and their relatives in the military serving in Iraq. The Athens Red Cross is trying to accomplish yet another mission: reaching out to the Hispanic community. The Athens Red Cross's mission is not only to help and attend to people in need, but also educate them on how to deal with natural and man-made disasters by teaching classes on CPR and first aid in Spanish to individuals and companies. The disaster services department has two bilingual staff members. Also, water safety programs and first aid courses are taught to second graders in the Athens-Clarke County School District, with the participation of a great number of Hispanic children. "We have some bilingual people working with us but we are always looking for volunteers who are willing to help us make that link between ourselves and the local Hispanic community," said Peggy Crowe, East Georgia Red Cross executive director. "We work closely with Stella Sailors and Catholic Social Services. They have a lot of experience working with and serving Hispanics in Athens and they are always ready to help us." There are two Red Cross offices serving Athens: a headquarters from which all the courses and services are planned as well as a blood drive location where people can go to donate blood throughout the year. Even though the local chapter is not completely ready to deal with emergencies having to do with Spanish-speaking people in Athens, important steps are being taken towards reaching that goal. "Here in Athens, we offer courses and brochures in Spanish and have bilingual personnel to attend to Hispanics," said Kristy Burton, health and safety services specialist. "We encourage bilingual people, especially students who are taking Spanish, to become volunteers. It is a great opportunity to practice Spanish first hand and it sure looks great on a resume."
