UNIDOS en Clarke Central

UNIDOS es una organización de estudiantes recientemente formada en Clarke Central High School. El grupo fue creado con el propósito principal de estimular y lograr la integración entre los estudiantes de habla y origen hispano, cuyos padres o ellos mismos provienen de diversos países latinoamericanos. De igual manera pretende que esta integración vaya más allá y acerque también a estudiantes que poseen otros orígenes étnicos.

Los integrantes de UNIDOS queremos ayudar a los estudiates recién llegados a este país a que se involucren, en primer lugar, con las actividades propias de Clarke Central y, en segunda instancia, con la comunidad. Otro propósito, igualmente importante, es el de celebrar y hacer conocer las fechas de relevancia en la cultura hispana. De igual manera, analizamos y comparamos ideas de los grupos que componen la comunidad hispana en los Estados Unidos.

Con el apoyo y la guía de Samuel Hicks, consejero de estudiantes en CCHS, y Kelly Harper, miembro del programa de educación al inmigrante del Condado de Athens-Clarke, los integrantes de UNIDOS nos hemos dedicado a intercambiar puntos de vista sobre las diferencias y particularidades de nuestras ricas y diversas culturas a objeto de no olvidar nuestras raíces latinoamericanas.

"La meta de UNIDOS es aumentar el nivel de compromiso de padres y estudiantes con Clarke Central High School, mejorar el conocimiento cultural y ofrecer una voz para los hispanos en la comunidad estudian-tíl. UNIDOS se formó originalmente entre la comunidad hispana dentro de CCHS", afirmó Hicks. "Pensamos que los estudiantes hispanos necesitaban un grupo para expresarse y ser parte activa de la comunidad escolar".

Hasta los momentos, UNIDOS ha realizado reuniones para familias hispanas, la celebración del Día de la Madre, eventos culturales en la comunidad y preparó una cena internacional para todos los estudiantes de CCHS.

Daniela C. González, aunque nacida en Athens, GA, es de descendencia venezolana. Es Senior en Clarke Central High School y representó al estado de Georgia en la Ruta Quetzal 2001, la cual seguió Cristóbal Colón durante su cuarto viaje.

UNIDOS (UNITED) is a student organization recently created at Clarke Central High School. It was formed with the aim of stimulating cultural integration amongst students of Hispanic background whose parents and themselves hail from many different Latin-American countries. The group seeks to extend its aim of cultural integration inclusively toward students of all ethnic backgrounds.

We, the members of UNIDOS, want to help students who have recently arrived to this country by introducing them to ways of taking part in Clarke Central activities as well as the activities of the community at large.

Another intention of equal importance is to celebrate and inform people about relevant dates in Hispanic culture. We also study and compare ideas about culture held by the different groups that together form the Hispanic community in the United States.

With the valuable help and guidance of Samuel Hicks, student adviser at Clarke Central, and Kelly Harper, member of the Migrant Education Program, the group seeks to facilitate exchange of opinions about the particularities distinguishing our rich and diverse cultures within the larger purview of a general Hispanic culture.

"The goal of UNIDOS is to increase parent and student involvement at Clarke Central High School, raise cultural awareness and to offer a voice for Hispanics in the school community. UNIDOS originally formed as the Latino population grew within the walls of CCHS," said Hicks. "Hispanics needed a place to express themselves and be a part of the school community."

Thus far, UNIDOS has held parent meetings for Hispanic families, a Mother’s Day celebration, attended cultural events in the community and hosted an international dinner open to all students at CCHS.

Daniela C. González, born in Athens, is of Venezuelan descent. She is a senior at Clarke Central High School and represented the State of Georgia in the Ruta Quetzal 2001, which followed the route of Christopher Columbus’ fourth trip.
