Cuidados para niños

Hay muchas cosas en las que sentimos la necesidad de gastar dinero. Educación, cuidado, buena comida y buena ropa. La más importante es olvidada muchas veces: nuestra salud y la salud de nuestros hijos. Sin tu salud no te puedes preocupar de las otras cosas en tu vida. En el Estado de Georgia, no existe ninguna razón para que alguien no reciba atención médica. Somos muy afortunados de tener ayuda estatal, federal y de organizaciones médicas sin fines de lucro de las cuales podemos recibir todo tipo de ayuda médica. Pero también es verdad el cómo obtener estos servicios puede infundir miedo y confuso si uno no habla bien el inglés. En este artículo, vamos a ver algunos de los diferentes tipos de seguros médicos de bajo costo y cuidado médico disponibles para niños.

Una buena salud comienza a temprana edad. Los niños deberían tener examenes rutinarios, cuidado médico preventivo e inmunizaciones. No importa si los padres no son ciudadanos norteamericanos o no hablan inglés, todos los niños tienen acceso a estos servicios a un costo reducido o gratis. Un excelente seguro médico para niños en Georgia es PeachCare. Este seguro es de bajo costo o inclusive gratis para niños sin importar la nacionalidad de los padres. Hay varios requisitos que tienen que cumplirse para que el niño sea elegible para PeachCare:

• El niño debe haber nacido en los Estados Unidos o haber vivido legalmente por cinco años.
• El niño no debe estar asegurado actualmente.
• El niño no debe ser elegible para Medicaid.
• La familia debe estar por debajo del 235 por ciento del nivel de pobreza (ej. Una familia de cuatro debe ganar menos de $42.000).

Cuando llene la solicitud para PeachCare, marque la casilla que indica que usted también está interesado en Medicaid. Este programa es básicamente el mismo que PeachCare pero no tiene una prima mensual. Cuando envíe la solicitud para PeachCare, también envíe el primer pago. Tan pronto el niño sea aceptado, la poliza comienza tan pronto su pago sea recibido. Si PeachCare no acepta la solicitud, le enviarán una explicación por escrito del por qué. Si no es aceptado, usted también puede apelar la decisión.

Medicaid es otro programa de salud. Para que un niño sea elegible para Medicaid, el cual es un programa financiado por el gobierno federal, el niño debe tener un número del Seguro Social. Medicaid también se basa en la necesidad financiera de los padres y estos deben demostrarlo. Medicaid cubre casi lo mismo que PeachCare pero para Medicaid no hay pago de prima mensual. Llame a "Powerline" para obtener ayuda respondiendo a sus preguntas pero también hay clínicas en Georgia que ofrecen servicios de cuidado gratis o de costo reducido. En caso de que un niño tenga una emergencia y no tiene seguro médico número de Seguro Social, existe un servicio de Medicaid Emergencia. Este servicio no toma en consideración la nacionalidad cuando se determina que el niño es elegible. Medicaid Emergencia cubre todas las situaciones consideradas de emergencia por un doctor. Health Care for Children

There are many things we feel the need to spend money on - education, entertainment, good food, nice clothes. The most important one is sometimes neglected: our health and the health of our children. Without your health you cannot even worry about the other things in life. In the State of Georgia there is no reason for anyone to go without medical care. We are very fortunate to have many state, federally funded and nonprofit medical resources from which we can receive all types of medical help. Now, acces-sing these resources can sometimes be an intimidating and confusing matter, especially if one doesn't speak fluent English. In this column we will take a helpful look at some of the different types of low-cost health insurance and health care available for children.

Good health starts at an early age. Children should have regular check ups, preventative health care and immunizations. It doesn't matter if the parents are not U.S. citizens or if they don't speak English - all children still have access to these free or reduced cost services. A wonderful insurance program for children in Georgia is called Peach

Care. Regardless of parental citizenship, PeachCare is a reduced cost (or even free) insurance program for children. There are several criteria that must be met in order for a child to be eligible.

• The child must be a citizen of the U.S. or have been raised here legally for five years
• The child must not currently have insurance
• The child must not be eligible for Medicaid
• The family must be below 235 percent of the poverty level (For example, a family of four must make under $42,000.)

The monthly premium is minimal. Coverage is free for children 5 and under. The monthly premium for children 6 and over is $7.50 for one child and $15 for two or more. For this very low monthly fee, all the medical needs of the child are met: dental, vision, hospitalization, emergency room visits, prescriptions and specialist care.

When you fill out the application for PeachCare, check the box indicating that you are also interested in Medicaid. This is basically the same program as PeachCare, but there is no monthly premium.

When you send in the application for PeachCare, also send the first payment. If your application is accepted, the policy begins as soon as the first premium is received. If PeachCare rejects the application, they will send you a written notice explaining why. If you receive a rejection, you may also appeal that decision.

Medicaid is another need-based health program. In order for a child to be eligible for Medicaid, which is a state and federally funded program, the child must have a social security number. Medicaid is also need-based and certain financial need must be proved by the parents. The coverage Medicaid provides is almost identical to that of Peach- Care, but for Medicaid there is no monthly premium. It is referred to as ‘Right from the Start' Medicaid.

To apply for Medicaid, contact the Division of Family and Child Services (DFCS). The national toll free phone number is 1-800-869-1150. The Athens DFCS office is located at 284 North Avenue. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 1887, Athens, GA 30603-1887, and its telephone number is 706-227-7000.

Remember that if you apply for PeachCare, your information will automatically be forwarded to Medicaid if you are eligible. Once your child is eligible for Medicaid or PeachCare, you will be able to use a network of approved doctors and dentists.

A good resource that will help you to find a physician in your area is the "Powerline". The Powerline is a referral service that helps you find a Medicaid approved doctor, dentist or psychologist. This service provides referrals to other social service organizations offering free or subsidized medical fees. The Powerline telephone numbers are 1-800-822-2539 (toll free) or 770-451-5501.

If a child is not a citizen or does not have a Social Security Card, the process to get help is a little more difficult, but not impossible. Call the Powerline to ask for assistance, and remember that there are also sliding scale, reduced cost, or even free care facilities all over northeast Georgia. These public health offices provide immunizations, pediatric visits and other health care services. They do not require a Social Security Number. Some of these in Athens are:

In the case of a serious medical problem for a child who does not have insurance or a Social Security Number, there are Emergency Medicaid services. This service does not take citizenship into consideration when determining eligibility. Emergency Medicaid will cover all situations deemed as an emergency by a doctor. Call DFACS to find out more about emergency Medicaid.

Everyone goes through difficult financial times, but that is no reason for your health to suffer. Preventative health measures such as exercise and eating well are the best medicine, but when you or your child does need the help of a professional, there are places to turn. Use the resources available to you; do not let your child suffer.
