Oscar D’León pone la salsa en Atlanta

A pesar de las condiciones climáticas del jueves 6 de Marzo, muchas personas se acercaron a las puertas del centro de espectáculos del centro comercial Plaza Fiesta ubicado en Atlanta en el 3595 Clairmont Road desde tempranas horas de la noche. Aproximadamente a las 8:00 p.m. se abrieron las puertas del recinto en el cual una de las figuras más importantes del mundo de la salsa iba a realizar su presentación. Conocido como "el sonero del mundo", el venezolano Oscar D’ León se preparaba para complacer y deleitar a sus seguidores con un repertorio de sus canciones más famosas.

El concierto empezó con la banda TamBoricua, la cual se encargó de motivar a los asistentes a pararse de sus asientos y empezar a utilizar sus habilidades como bailarines de música latina. Canciones de Gilberto Santa Rosa y Juan Luís Guerra, entre otros, fueron interpretadas para el deleite de los presentes. La sala de conciertos, la cual cuenta con un espacio de aproximadamente 14.000 pies cuadrados, se había convertido en una gran sala de baile donde familiares y amigos se unían al resto de la multitud en el centro de la pista disfrutando del sabor de las tumbadoras, las maracas y el guiro.

Pero esto sólo era el principio de una noche llena de ritmo y sabor latino. El gran momento se acercaba. Todos estaban a la espectativa del gran anuncio de la noche. Rápidamente las personas empezaron a movilizarse hacia el frente de la tarima al observar el movimiento de los instrumentos de la banda del sonero del mundo. Mientras tanto, en dos pantallas gigantes ubicadas cerca de la tarima, se transmitía un vídeo anunciando los próximos eventos a presentarse en esta sala de espectáculos.

Llegado el gran momento, la banda completa hizo acto de presencia y comenzó lo que iba a ser uno de los mejores concierto latinos llevado a cabo en la ciudad de Atlanta. El presentador dió la bienvenida a Oscar D’ León y el recibimiento fue impactante, alrededor de 1150 personas, lo recibieron con gritos, aplausos y sonrisas.

La primera canción interpretada por Oscar fue el Alma llanera, símbolo característico de su país, Venezuela, lo cual hizo que los venezolanos presentes sacaran las banderas tricolor. Pero no sólo compatriotas de Oscar estaban presentes en la sala, colombianos, peruanos, boricuas, mexicanos, dominicanos y estadounidenses, por nombrar algunos, colmaron las instalaciones para ver al rey D’Leon esa noche en la ciudad más importante del estado de Georgia.

Canciones como Llorarás, Parampampan, Detalles, La piragua y otras fueron interpretadas durante el concierto de más de dos horas. Por supuesto, no podía faltar la canción la cual interpreta en compañía de su hijo titulada Padre e hijo la cual deja clara evidencia de los dotes que por herencia posee su decendiente. Pero Oscar no sólo interpretó canciones de su repertorio personal, también se pudieron escuchar canciones alusivas a muchos de los países que los asistentes representaban esa noche. La canción de origen mexicano El Rey es un ejemplo.

Luego de finalizado el espectáculo pudimos conversar con Oscar y saber que tiene un compromiso en la ciudad de Miami. Oscar ha sido nombrado el rey de la calle 8 del carnaval de Miami y luego viajará a Bruselas, Bélgica, para realizar otro concierto. Oscar también respondió a estas preguntas:

ODL: Estoy muy contento y satisfecho de la acogida que el público me ha dado esta noche en la ciudad de Atlanta.

ODL: Bueno, para nosotros los artistas, el respaldo de nuestro público es sumamente importante y el ser el rey de la calle 8 denota ese respaldo y eso me hace muy feliz.

ODL: En verdad no. Con la difícil situación que está viviendo Venezuela, muchos venezolanos están buscando nuevos horizontes y Atlanta es uno de ellos.

Oscar D’León Brings the Salsa to Atlanta

Despite the bad weather on Thursday, March 6, many people showed up in the early evening at the entrance to the concert auditorium at the Plaza Fiesta shopping center at 3595 Clairmont Road in Atlanta. Around 8 p.m. the auditorium doors were opened as one of the most important figures of Salsa music in the world was preparing to perform. Known to latin music audiences as "el sonero del mundo" (loosely translatable as nothing less than ‘soundmaster of the world’), Venezuelan Oscar D’León was getting ready to delight his fans with a repertory of some of his most famous songs.

The concert opened with a performance from the group TamBoricua, who motivated the crowd to get up out of their seats and start using their abilities as Latin music dancers. Songs by Gilberto Santa Rosa and Juan Luís Guerra, among others, were played for the enjoyment of the concertgoers. The concert venue, approximately 14,000 square feet in size, had been transformed into a huge dance floor where family members and friends got together with the rest of the crowd in the center of the floor to enjoy of the whirling sounds of tumbadoras, maracas and guiro.

This was just the beginning of a night full of rhythm and Latin music. The big moment was approaching. Everybody awaited the headlining announcement of the night. People quickly started bustling towards the front of the stage when they saw members of the D’León band getting ready to play. Meanwhile, two big screens showed a video announcing future presentations at the concert venue.

When the time came, the whole band showed up on stage and started what was going to be one of the best Latin concerts in Atlanta in recent memory. The master of ceremonies introduced Oscar D’León and the crowd’s welcome was fantastic. Around 1150 fans received Oscar with screams, applause and smiles.

The first song played by Oscar was Alma llanera, a song that stands as a veritable symbol of his country, Venezuela - and at which point all Venezuelans in the audience started waving small tri-color Venezuelan flags. But not only Oscar’s countrymen were present - Colombians, Peruvians, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Dominicans and Americans amongst others crowed the venue to see this King of Salsa reign that night over the most important metropolis in Georgia.

Songs such as Llorarás, Parampampan, Detalles, La piragua and others were played during the two-hour concert. But the concert also couldn’t miss including the performance of a duet by Oscar and his son, titled Father and Son, which made evident the skills inherited by the young legacy in question. Oscar not only played songs from his personal repertory. Songs from many other Latin American countries were also heard on the dance floor that night. Oscar’s stellar performance of the famous Mexican song El Rey was a perfect example.

Once the concert was over, we had a chance to talk with Oscar and find out that he has future plans in Miami. Oscar has been named ‘The King of 8th Street’ for the upcoming Miami Carnival. After that, he will travel to Brussels, Belgium, to continue his concert tour.

We talked to Oscar about the show and asked him his thoughts on the performance.

ODL: I am very happy and satisfied with the welcome that the fans have given me tonight in Atlanta.

ODL: Well, for we artists, the support of our fans is of consummate importance and to be named the King of 8th Street shows this support and that makes me happy.

ODL: To be honest, no. With the difficult situation that Venezuela is in, many Venezuelans are looking for new horizons and Atlanta is one of them.
