OPINIÓN Los latinos y el susodicho "melting pot" por Armando Tasistro Es frecuente que al analizar el tema de la inmigración ilegal haya personas que echan mano a la historia y comparan la situación actual de los latinos con la de otros grupos étnicos que llegaron a este país con anterioridad. Al hacer esta comparación llegan a varias conclusiones, entre las que destaca la necesidad de que los latinos se integren a esta cultura, aprendiendo inglés y adoptando las costumbres y el estilo de vida americano (también conocido por "The American way of life"). En este contexto, casi siempre se menciona al famoso crisol o "melting pot" en inglés, y generalmente, las personas que traen a colación la imagen del crisol aluden a la necesidad de que los latinos sigamos el camino de otros pueblos que se integraron fundiendo su cultura con la estadounidense; de ahí viene la imagen del crisol, herramienta que se usa para fundir materiales. Es importante que reflexionemos sobre el significado profundo y las consecuencias posibles de este modelo de integración. En primer lugar, el modelo del "melting pot" visualiza a la integración como una fusión de las culturas de los inmigrantes con la cultura americana blanca. Este proceso de uniformización se presenta como un éxito, pero es en realidad un fracaso especialmente desde el punto de vista cultural porque implica la destrucción de la herencia cultural de los inmigrantes, y su sometimiento a la cultura dominante. La integración es en realidad una asimilación: Aunque pueden haber ciertos elementos de las culturas inmigrantes que mantienen su identidad, lo esencial se pierde, y más aun la decisión acerca de cuáles elementos retener siempre es prerrogativa de los estadounidenses blancos. En segundo lugar, es interesante notar que cuando se mencionan ejemplos de otros pueblos que siguieron este modelo de integración se mencionan generalmente a los irlandeses, italianos, escandinavos, u otros pueblos europeos y de piel blanca. No me ha tocado escuchar que se mencione a los indígenas americanos, a los afro-americanos, a los asiáticos, o a los latinos, quienes parecen estar descalificados para contribuir a la cultura americana. En tercer lugar, para que los afro-americanos o latinos puedan progresar social- y económicamente deben imitar a los americanos blancos de la mejor manera posible. En esto tengo una experiencia propia para compartir: Algunos años atrás un abogado americano blanco de Athens me dijo que yo era el tipo de inmigrante que querían en EE.UU. porque parecía americano, pero me pidió que no abriera la boca, para que no se notara mi acento latino. El modelo de integración mediante asimilación que se promueve con la imagen del "melting pot" es en esencia racista porque persigue la preservación de la superioridad de la cultura dominante, estadounidense-blanca, a costa de la pérdida de las características esenciales que definen a las culturas minoritarias. La alternativa que los latinos debemos promover y defender consiste en una integración cultural donde no perdamos las características culturales que nos definen, y que se manifiestan no solamente en el idioma, sino en tradiciones, comida, arte, celebraciones religiosas, deportes, y muchos otros aspectos de convivencia y organización social. El modelo alternativo al "melting pot" es el del guisado o la ensalada, donde la combinación de componentes es sabrosa y nutritiva — o sea están realmente integrados — pero se pueden identificar a los ingredientes individuales. Si se permite desarrollar una verdadera cultura estadounidense, esta debería reflejar las contribuciones de las diversas culturas que existen en nuestra nación: indígenas nativas, latinas, europeas, afro-americanas, y asiáticas. Pero para eso se debe superar el modelo racista actual por medio del cual una cultura tiene el poder de someter a todas las demás.		OPINION The Latinos and the melting pot by Armando Tasistro When dealing with the issue of illegal immigration one frequently encounters people that resort to history and compare the present situation of Latinos with that of other ethnic groups that arrived earlier to this country. When making this comparison several conclusions are reached among which one can highlight the need for Latinos to integrate into this culture by learning English and adopting the customs and prevalent lifestyle known as "The American way of life". It is in this context that there is usually a reference to the "melting pot" as a crucible, and generally those that bring it up make allusion to the need on the part of Latinos to follow the route of other peoples that integrated by fusing their culture with the American one. It is important that we reflect on the deep meaning and possible consequences of this integration model. First, in the melting pot model integration is visualized as the fusion of the immigrants' cultures to the dominant white American culture. This process of eliminating cultural differences is presented as a success, but in reality it is a failure, especially from the cultural standpoint because it implies the destruction of the cultural heritage of the immigrants and its overpowering by the dominant culture. Integration is in effect understood as assimilation. Although there might be some elements from the immigrant cultures that retain their identity the essential parts are lost and moreover, the decision as to what elements can be retained is a prerogative of the white Americans. Second, it is interesting to note that when examples of peoples that followed this model are mentioned reference is usually made to the Irish, Italians, Scandinavian, or other white Europeans. I have not had a chance to listen to someone mentioning the Native Americans, African-Americans, Asian Americans, or Latinos, who seem to be disqualified to contribute to the American culture. Third, in order for African-Americans or Latinos to progress socially or economically they must imitate the white American in the best possible way. In this regard I have a personal experience to share: Some years ago a white American lawyer in Athens told me that I was the kind of immigrant they wanted in the USA because I looked American, but he asked me to keep my mouth shut so that I would not be noted by my Latino accent. The model of integration through assimilation that is promoted with the image of the "melting pot" is essentially racist because it seeks to preserve the superiority of the dominant white American culture at the expense of the loss of the essential characteristics that define the minority cultures. The alternative that Latinos must promote and defend consists of a cultural integration in which we don't lose the cultural characteristics that define us, and that are expressed not only in our language but also in our traditions, foods, art, religious celebrations, sports, and many others aspects of community life and social organization. The alternate model to the "melting pot" is that of the "stew" or "salad", in which the combination of components is flavorful and nutritious — which evidences that they are truly integrated — but where the individual components can still be identified. If a true American culture is allowed to develop it should reflect the contributions from the diverse cultures that exist in our country: Native-American, Latino-American, European-American, African-American, and Asian-American. However, in order to accomplish that the racist present model that allows one culture to overpower all the others must be overcome.
